No musical experience is necessary in order to participate in the program. Okaidja has many years of experience teaching beginners how to drum, and he is able to create a comfortable and safe space where everybody can learn at their own pace.

Contact Okaidja to discuss your needs and he will work with you to design a customized program that meets your specific needs. This can range from a 10-minute icebreaker exercise to a weeklong residency with your organization.

RHYTHMIC REJUVENATION (30 minutes to 1 hour)

Beginning the day with this energizing and interactive workshop will provide a unique opportunity for participants to have fun and relax. Okaidja will boost the spirit of the participants by teaching them how to play simple rhythms together using a variety of percussion instruments such as bells, drums, and shakers.  Playing high-energy African rhythms together will have a therapeutic effect on the entire group. The focus of this workshop is creative, spontaneous expression. It is a great way to reduce tension and can be used as a pre-conference ice-breaker or as a mid-day boost to reenergize the participants.

TALKING DRUMS  (1 hour to a whole day)

This invigorating workshop focuses on the key elements of communication and leadership skills. Okaidja will assign different parts to the team players in order for them to play like an ensemble. Playing alongside one another strengthens team cohesion and the ability to work together effectively. The value of interdependence is learned because each individual plays a specific part, yet all participants rely on one another in order to create a harmonious song. Okaidja uses the Talking Drum workshop to build strong bonds and to encourage teamwork. Participants in this workshop will develop nonverbal communication skills through playing percussion together. Okaidja will facilitate an innovative group drumming experience that allows each team member to lead, utilizing their skills such as delegation, initiative, and creativity.  Participants will step into the role of leader and be responsible for holding the group together through their musical direction. The Talking Drums workshop will empower the participants by giving them a fresh, artistic approach to leadership.

TOGETHER AS ONE (1 day to 3 days long)

This restorative workshop will allow the team to create an entire composition. Okaidja will guide the team through the process of making music together using drums, bells, and shakers. This process will highlight the importance of teamwork and show what can be achieved when the team functions as a whole with a common goal in sight. This workshop increases self-esteem of the group as they realize that they can compose an authentic piece of music and it truly shows the value of cooperation among members. Each individual will feel a sense of personal achievement while recognizing the value of unity and cooperation.
